SECOND World War veterans will be joining in a D-Day commemoration parade in Marlborough on the 60th anniversary on Sunday.

In the absence of Mayor Graham Francis, who has another engagement, the parade from the Town Hall to the War Memorial in New Road will be led by deputy mayor, Coun Hilary Cripps.

Members of the Royal British Legion including war veterans, their widows and families will be taking part.

Coun Cripps said: "We are doing this as a mark of respect for those who gave their lives and all the others who served their country during the war.

"There may not be many veterans still living but it is our duty as a community to continue to remember those who did not come home."

The Royal British Legion has organised the event that will start at about 11.45am when councillors assemble in their robes at the town hall.

They will be led by Town Crier Alf Johnson and mace bearers Eric Gay and Tony Sansom and will march along New Road to the war memorial for a brief service at noon. The deputy mayor and the Royal British Legion will lay wreaths.
