FOR a second time crooks have tried to pull off a bank holiday weekend cashpoint scam in Marlborough.

On Saturday night a microchip device was found fitted over the card slot of the Barclay's cash dispenser by the same man who found one on the same machine at Easter, when thousands of pounds was drained from the accounts of unsuspecting customers.

And, just like at Easter, other cash points in the High Street had been put of action by the thieves forcing people to use the Barclay's machine.

This time, however, police have recovered a concealed camera that was fitted on trunking above the dispenser and looking down on the key pad.

WPC Brown said the device, which is undergoing forensic tests, is believed to be capable of transmitting details to a nearby receiver. It was possible, she said, that the crooks had someone standing near the machine and she appealed to anyone who used the Barclay's dispenser on Saturday afternoon or early evening to try to recall if they saw anyone loitering nearby.

Police have been keeping a close watch on all the cash dispensers in the town, particularly at weekends, following the Easter cashpoint scam.

WPC Brown said it's vital that anyone who used the Barclay's cashpoint on Saturday checked their bank accounts to make sure that no unauthorised withdrawals had been made.

She added: "To date we have not heard from anyone who has had cash taken from their accounts so we may have been able to stop them in their tracks."
