13205/1ST Nicholas Primary School, Baydon, near Marlborough, is "an effective school, which provides good value for money", says the schools inspectorate Ofsted.

Staff and governors are very pleased and headteacher Peter Chambers said: "We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised our high standards, inclusiveness and quality of teaching."

The report notes that standards in English, maths and science are above the national average.

Pupils have very good attitudes to learning and their behaviour is very good.

The quality of teaching is very good and the provision for pupils with special educational needs is very good.

The report goes on to say that teachers provide interesting and well-planned activities and pupils learn well.

Mr Chambers said that St Nicholas' results at the end of Key Stage 2 puts the school in the top 25 per cent of schools nationally in science, English and mathematics. In English, the school is in the top five per cent.

The only caveat in the report is that, although the school's improvement plan covers short-term developments effectively, it lacks a longer-term strategic plan to cover major improvements.

Mr Chambers said that this matter has been included in the school's action plan.

An inspection was also carried out on the school's religious background by the Salisbury diocese and that was also couched in glowing terms.
