THE biggest event in Swindon stamp collectors' calendars will be held on Saturday, June 12.

Swindon Philatelic Society has been organising exhibitions since 1948, and SWINPEX 2004 will be held at St Joseph's Lower School, in Queen's Drive.

It will feature 40 stamp and postcard dealers whose wares cover all aspects of the hobby, as well as up to 25 philatelic societies holding meetings and offering advice.

Visitors will be able to buy stamps, first day covers, postcards and equipment ranging from albums to powerful magnifying glasses.

In addition, the Swindon Society will have its own stall at the exhibition, which will be open from 10am until 4pm.

Society spokesman David Gibbon said: "Swindon Philatelic Society was formed in December 1943 hence we are very proud to be currently celebrating our 60th anniversary.

"The inaugural meeting was held on December 10, 1943, at Swindon Town Hall. During the meeting, the air-raid siren sounded and everyone attending the meeting had to take cover.

"Once the siren sounded the all clear, the meeting resumed.

"The society has thrived from that meeting and today it is still a very active and enthusiastic society with about 90 members."

SWINPEX 2004 will be open from 10am until 4.30pm, and free parking will be available at the venue, which is close to the Magic Roundabout.
