POLICE and pub landlords are gearing up for a busy summer as hundreds of football fans descend on west Wiltshire bars to watch England's progress in Euro 2004.

With David Beckham's England troops set to kick off their cup bid against former world champions France next Sunday, west Wiltshire's licensing officer will meet with pub landlords in Trowbridge on Wednes-day to discuss tactics.

Police have drawn-up an action plan with a police sergeant and six uniformed officers on mobile patrol in case trouble kicks off.

This week's Trowb-ridge Pubwatch meeting will be a carbon-copy of preparations made in the build up to the 2002 World Cup, which saw west Wiltshire streets packed with football fans and relatively few incidents of violence.

Licensing officer Jackie Gallimore said doormen, staff training, drinks promotions and venue safety will be put under the spotlight.

Contact numbers will be gathered so landlords can call the on-duty police sergeant the minute a problem flares-up, with Eng-land's crunch games considered the most likely time for trouble.

Trowbridge police inspector Glynn Hookings said the division as a whole had evaluated how to deal with the increased number of people flocking to the town's pubs.

"A sergeant plus six officers will be on mobile patrol and will be able to respond to any incident in respect of the football," he said.

"This will be an additional resource to call upon.

"We are expecting it to be a very busy time in the pubs.

"It is the moment a game has finished, when people congregate on the streets, a disturbance can occur.

"We need to make sure people get home safely especially when some of the matches are quite contentious."
