HUNDREDS of people in Warminster have signed up to save a threatened post office.
The Broadway Common post office is earmarked for closure as the supermarket chain Tesco aims to turn the former One Stop into a Tesco Express.
Now campaigners are hoping public opposition and a petition signed by more than 400 households will encourage supermarket bosses to change their mind.
Town Councillor Les Rose picked up the petition from Carl's Hair Salon in Broadway Common on Tuesday morning.
He said: "There are lots of elderly people and pensioners who will lose a vital lifeline. People are going to blockade the new Tesco Express and if they upset too many people it will never get off the ground."
The petition had been on display at the Star Fish Bar and Carl's Hair Salon for the past month.
No date has been given for the closure of the post office but it is expected to stop taking mail by September. The supermarket giant also plans to close Brook Road post office in Trowbridge.
Tesco said it is looking at options to reopen the post offices in nearby premises in Trow-bridge and Warminster. Anyone with suitable premises should call Tesco on 0121 643 9337.
