PARTYGOERS danced the night away at the Marriott Charity Ball on Saturday to help raise thousands of pounds for local organisations.

The black-tie dinner dance took place at the Swindon Marriott Hotel in Pipers Way.

More than £43,000 was raised at the event for nine local charities and trusts including The Green Hut in Gorse Hill, which helps the homeless and other vulnerable people.

Also receiving money will be the Well Woman Centre in Milton Road, Swindon, Samaritans, Asthma Relief and the Swindon Pregnancy Crisis Centre.

Technology for the Disabled, Music Alive in Purton, Friends of Young Carers and Stepping Forward will also benefit.

Since the first charity ball was held in 1989 by the Swindon Rotary Club, more than £400,000 has been generated for good causes across the town.

Rob Harman, chairman of the Charity Ball committee for 2004, said: "It was a fun night for everybody involved and a fantastic way of bringing people together to raise money for these local charities.

"It has been great to see so much support for Swindon charities from the Swindon people and businesses."

The Evening Advertiser, Nationwide Building Society, The Marriott Hotel and Swindon Rotary Club backed the event.
