NINE local charities are richer today after sharing in the proceeds of this year's record-breaking Marriott Charity Ball.
The stylish dinner and dance, which was attended by 200 of the town's leading business and civic personalities in May, raised £44,000, more than any other in its history. The total was reached with the help of a matching grant from Nationwide.
The Marriott ball began 15 years ago and had become one of the area's most successful charity events. It has raised a total of well over £440,000 for the benefit of good causes in the Swindon area
This year's ball was also supported by the Evening Advertiser and the Rotary Club.
Cheques were presented last night at the Nationwide offices in Pipers Way.
"The charity ball is something we are very committed to. It's great that so many local charities can benefit," said Michelle Leighton, Nationwide's community affairs manager.
Ball committee chairman Rob Harman said: "It was an absolute delight to chair it and we had a great group of people working on it.
"To raise £44,000 is staggering and we are delighted at the range of charities we have been able to help.
"Those involved with them are an impressive group of people.
"I want to give a massive thank you to everyone who supported it."
This year's beneficiaries include organisations that help women and children with special needs, and groups that help people with handicaps and which have had to struggle for financial support.
