28365/3CHIPPENHAM NEWS: PUPILS at a Chippenham primary school used a splash of colour in a project to illustrate stories from the Bible.

An exhibition, showing 250 paintings children at St Peter's Primary School produced during the spring term, was opened for one night yesterday.

Pieces of work were based on stories from the Bible's Book of Genesis.

Each of the school's nine classes chose a different theme, with displays ranging from the creation to Joseph's technicolour dreamcoat.

Classes also helped produce a group piece which will hang on permanent display in the school hall.

Headteacher Sue Smith praised a local trust for funding the project.

She said: "Thanks to the Borough Lands Trust, the school has benefited from an exciting art project.

"It is a pleasure for us and the children to have a lasting record of their artistic achievements and it will be thrilling to see all the work hung together."

Artist Alexandra Walker was invited to help pupils work on the project and she gave a short talk about the display last night.

Mrs Walker said: "It was a pleasure to work on this project with the children. They were full of enthusiasm for the subject and had lots of exciting ideas.

"They put a lot of hard work and energy into the project and I'm really impressed with their work it's very inspiring."

Clerical assistant Karen Honour said the work had a massive visual impact.

"They really do draw your attention," she said.

"The first morning they were in the hall the children were told to look with their eyes and not to discuss it with their neighbour because there is such a visual impact.

"The project encouraged children to express their individuality as if you ask children to create the same thing they will end up with something different."

Mrs Honour said pupils had worked on several art projects in the past including one where they helped make three-foot metal bugs which have been fixed to the outside of the school walls.

"We do put quite a lot of emphasis on all forms of art in the school, especially things which are a little bit different," she said.

Mrs Walker's own work is on display in the Caf Nova, New Road, Chippenham and she has a studio in Lowden.
