WEST Wiltshire MP Andrew Murrison has challenged the Environment Agency's plans to allow the burning of toxic waste in cement and lime kilns.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Dr Murrison asked Mr Blair if he objected to the agency's proposals but the Prime Minister said the EA should be relied upon.

The EA is consulting on amendments to its Substitute Fuels Protocol which, if allowed, will mean industrial waste like pesticides and the by-products of the pharmaceutical industry will be able to be re-badged as fuel and a decision is expected today.

Coming a week after Westbury cement works Lafarge got the go-ahead to start a six-month trial of using RLF, Dr Murrison said: "We all want to see less waste go to the landfill but I'm not persuaded that putting it up the chimney is the answer.

"The controls, checks and balances in cement or lime kiln fall short of those in purpose-built incinerators. This makes it inappropriate to use sites like Westbury to dispose of domestic or imported industrial waste."
