TROWBRIDGE Rugby Club has two new faces at the helm as the players bid to follow up last season's success.

Simon Leat replaces Chris Watts as director of rugby while second row Mark Durant steps into Barry Coombes' boots as first team captain.

On Wednesday the pair told a players' meeting they were determined the club should not rest on its laurels.

The 2003/04 season was Trowbridge's first in the Southern Counties League and saw them finish in mid table. The first team followed this up by defeating Swindon in the Dorset and Wilts Vase final.

Leat, 36, has been involved with the club since a very young age and was first team captain from 1992 to 1993 and 1994 to 1997. He retired from playing in 2002/03 and was coach of the first team as they gained promotion to the Southern Counties League.

He admits the club had not expected to do so well, but hopes his appointment of Mark Durant as first team captain will help ensure more of the same.

He said: "We want to consolidate our league position and take the club forward. I spoke to all the first team players and asked them who they thought would be a good captain. I got this down to a short list of four and held interviews and chose Mark. He was young player of the year for three or four years in a row and has been playing in the first team for the past five seasons."

Leat added: "My job is a voluntary post. It's just looking after the playing side of the club, overseeing everything from the senior teams to the minis.

"We are looking to have four senior teams next year."
