SWINDON paceman Jon Lewis put the skids under Sussex with his third five-wicket haul of the season.

The home side endured a wretched first day in their Frizzell County Championship Division One clash at gale-lashed Arundel, where Gloucestershire hustled them out for just 106 before racing to 63 without loss at the close.

Lewis was the Sussex slayer, snapping up 5-33 in 13 overs to take his season's tally to 34.

Sussex, who gained their first championship win by beating Lancashire at Old Trafford in their last outing, were sent crashing to their lowest score of the season in 43.4 overs after being put in.

Lewis, leading wicket taker in the division, quickly had the defending champions struggling with openers Ward and Montgomerie being dismissed to catches at slip inside the first nine overs.

Skipper Chris Adams failed to get going and was bowled round his legs by Mike Smith before Matt Prior threw his wicket away shortly before lunch in attempting a big drive off Shabbir Ahmed and being caught behind.

Lewis struck again to end Goodwin's 55-ball innings as Alex Gidman dived full length to take a superb two-handed catch at second slip and Sussex had lost half their side for only 54.

The hosts contributed to their own downfall with Tim Ambrose and Martin-Jenkins falling to poor shot selection in being caught at the wicket off Lewis and Mark Alleyne respectively.

Mushtaq Ahmed had made only a single when he was taken at backward point in attempting to force Alleyne off his back foot, and a ninth-wicket stand of 22 in 11 overs between James Kirtley and Akram helped Sussex limp to three figures.

Gloucestershire strengthened their position with in-form openers Philip Weston and Craig Spearman holding firm to reach 34 and 24 respectively before bad light brought about an early finish at 6pm.

The start of the Worcestershire-Surrey Frizzell Division One fixture was delayed by four hours because of overnight rain and prolonged showers in the morning.

When play eventually started Surrey staggered to 16-2 in seven overs before the heavens opened. Mark butcher was out for four and Mark Ramprakash run out for nought.

Bad light and rain restricted Hampshire and Yorkshire in Division Two to just 64 balls at the Rose Bowl.

Yorkshire captain Matthew Wood chose to bat after winning the toss and was the only man out as Yorkshire reached 34-1 for one from 10 overs.

There was no play in any other game due to the rain.
