North Wiltshire's hugely successful kerbside recycling scheme comes to Malmesbury this weekend.

Almost 7,300 homes in Malmesbury, Lyneham, Cricklade and Purton will have the black recycling boxes issued to them this week, together with instructions for use.

Residents will then be able to recycle glass, metal, textiles and paper, but not plastic, simply by leaving them outside their houses to be collected along with the rubbish.

The scheme has already been a great success in Wootton Bassett and Chippenham, and its arrival in Malmesbury is the latest phase of the rolling programme.

Sylvia Doubell, lead member for waste minimisation and recycling, said: "We are delighted that we are extending the kerbside recycling service.

"This is the next phase in plans to increase recycling and waste minimisation in North Wiltshire.

"Residents in the district are very keen to do their bit and I am sure people in Malmesbury, Cricklade, Lyneham and Purton will welcome this extended service.

"The combination of kerbside recycling and our new wheeled bins will have a significant impact on reducing the amount of rubbish going to landfill."

The £80,000 for the scheme was provided by Wiltshire County Council, after an application for a grant from the Department for Rural Affairs was turned down.

Wiltshire County Councillor Toby Sturgis said: "Obviously we were disappointed that the grant application failed, but we wanted to make sure that these residents had access to quick and trouble free recycling facilities whatever happened, which is why we allocated the money.

"This should make a real difference to the lives of people in Malmesbury, and to the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill sites."

The kerbside recycling service is a free fortnightly service run by North Wiltshire District Council in conjunction with the normal rubbish collection.
