YOUNG people have just six days left to enter a competition designed to underline the importance of staying safe while in Internet chat rooms.

The two winners of the quiz, organised by Wiltshire Police for 11-18-year-olds, will be given a personal computer.

They will also win computers, given by Fujitsu Siemens, for their schools.

The deadline for the competition is June 30.

More than 1,000 people have already entered the online quiz whose address is www.wiltshire.police.uk

The quiz is supported by Wiltshire County Council and Swindon Borough Councils

Sgt Roger Bull from Wiltshire police's community safety department, said: "The Internet can be fun and educational.

"But it also allows young people access into an insecure world of cyberspace where they can communicate with strangers who may project a false image of themselves. We want to help young people realise the importance of staying safe in chat rooms and encourage them to follow a six point plan."

The police urge young people not to give out personal details such as names, ages, photographs or addresses and never to arrange to meet someone they have just met on the Internet.

The quiz was developed following a questionnaire by Tomorrow's Voice involving more than 2,300 11-18-year-olds.

The results raised concerns over the potential dangers of chat rooms.

They showed that seven per cent of young people had agreed to meet someone they had met through a chat room without checking with their parents first, and 11 per cent had been made to feel uncomfortable in a chat room. The survey also found that 79 per cent went online at least once or twice a week.
