CALNE'S attacking football drove Almondsbury nutty on Saturday, as they dismissed their largely unknown rivals on their home ground.

Calne showed Screwfix Premier new boys what the division is all about in the first league game, but manager Kelvin Highmore said: "I was worried because they came up as champions, not third or fourth, and they recently won the Fry's Cup in Bristol."

Calne dominated the first half but squandered many clearcut chances. They finally broke the deadlock just before half time when Matt Pratley put a powerful header from a Danny Jones cross past the keeper.

After the break youngster Kevin Banks doubled the lead in spectacular fashion. It took Banks just a minute to skip past two tackles, run the ball to the edge of the 20 yard box and curl in a magnificent effort. Highmore was particularly pleased with Banks: "I said from the beginning of pre-season that he would be one to watch."

Calne then relaxed with their two-goal cushion and allowed Almondsbury to grab one back. The goal came on 58 minutes from a long-range free kick.

The complacency disappeared and it took just four minutes to restore the two-goal advantage, Pratley bagging his second headed goal of the game from a James Lye corner.

This was a great start to the campaign and Highmore was chuffed. He said: "We did really well. We played as a team, defended and attacked as a team but there was some woeful finishing in the first half. We should have gone into the break 4-0 up."

"We now need to stamp our authority on our home games, which were our weakness last season."
