THE families of Graham and Nicola Smith who died in a head-on crash near Devizes in March, are unhappy with a coroner's accidental death verdict on their deaths.

Police collision investigator PC Steve Colwill gave evidence that the Smith's car had been travelling at about 51mph and was on its correct side of the road when it was struck by a Vectra driven by Mr Selway, which he calculated had been travelling at no slower than 57mph and possibly as fast as 67mph at the point of impact.

Another witness, Adrian Slade of Seend, said moments before the accident he had been driving down Caen Hill when he was overtaken by Mr Selway's Vectra which he estimated was doing 90mph.

Mrs Smith's father, Marlborough postman John Fell, formerly of Avebury, who now lives in Wroughton, speaking also on behalf of his son-in-law's parents, said the families were disappointed with the verdicts.

The parents issued a joint statement saying: "All the family of Nicola and Graham Smith were amazed after seeing written statements containing evidence such as the other driver was travelling at speeds of approximately 90mph prior to the collision, thus breaking the law.

"That, added to the facts that an expert who deals with road traffic accidents stated that at the point of impact Nicola and Graham were on the correct side of the road and the other driver was on their side and crashed head-on into them.

"We were left very dissatisfied with the verdict of accidental death.

"We don't see how if anybody is killed while going about their lawful business as Graham and Nicola were, it can be deemed to be an accident.

"We have lost a daughter and Jean and Maurice Smith of Devizes have lost a son."

Mr and Mrs Smith's children, Lucy, 11, and Sam, 13, are being looked after by their grandparents and other relatives.

Mr Fell said: "Sam and Lucy are both coping very well but nobody can replace the parents."
