July 8: SWINDON Cares, a week of events to raise thousands of pounds for good causes, is just a few days away.

Last year's fundraising drive raised £15,000. this year organisers hope to double that amount.

The fundraising spectacular, which runs from Sunday to Friday, will open with the White Horse Bike Ride and Treasure Hunt.

Starting from Stanton Park at 10am on July 11, the 25-mile bike ride is set to cover some of England's finest countryside, overlooking the White Horse at Uffington.

Entrants pay £6 in advance, or £10 on the day. The price includes a T-shirt, and refreshments will be available along the route. For details call (01793) 692166.

The entrant who collects the most sponsorship will win a bicycle donated by Halfords. Winners of the treasure hunt can also expect to win prizes.

Other events include a High Sherriff's Concert, a pub quiz, six-a-side football tournament, and speed-dating.

Last year's cash was donated to Age Concern, Macmillan Cancer Relief and NSPCC Swindon.

This year the money will go to the same three charities plus the GWR Community Trust, which will in turn distribute its share among a wide range of local charities.
