July 15: SWINDON CARES: BRAINBOXES at Old Town off-licence Magnum added some fizz to Swindon Cares Week with a corker of a performance in a fundraising quiz.

The Wood Street store stole the show with an impressive performance against other businesses, including the Advertiser.

The team of staff and customers answered nearly all their questions correctly in the event at Swindon Town's Winner's Lounge on Tuesday.

Brian Saunders, partner at the off-licence, said: "The questions weren't easy. Luckily we recruited some regular quiz-goers.

"It was a great evening and a lot of fun. We can't wait for next year when we'll be back to defend our title."

All week companies across Swindon have thrown their weight behind the fundraising drive.

Last year £15,000 was raised for Swindon Cares a charity that donates money to Age Concern Swindon, NSPCC Swindon, Macmillan Cancer Relief and GWR Community Trust.

And Pam Webb, of Zurich, one of the organisers, is confident the town will double that figure.

She said: "I think we will hit our £30,000 target."

The week kicked off with a cycle ride around Uffington. The High Sheriff of Wiltshire, James Arkell, completed the 25-mile course before hosting a fundraising concert at Christ Church.

Today, the Advertiser is holding a dress-down day and tonight The Apartment will be hosting a speed-dating event.
