September 23 2004: OLYMPIC runner Matt O'Dowd is urging people to help keep runners' spirits up by manning the route of the Swindon Half Marathon.

Race organisers are appealing for volunteers to act as marshals and hand out drink and goody bags between 10am and 3pm on October 17.

Matt, of Rodbourne, who completed the gruelling 26-mile marathon in Athens last month, finishing in 50th place, is to run in the Swindon event.

And the 28-year-old underlined the vital role played by volunteers.

"At the end of the day the event would not go ahead without them," he said.

"They play a vital role especially at water stations where it is important for runners to pick up refreshments without hassle.

"They also make sure any bottles on the road, which could get in the way, are removed quickly.

"People can come in delirious or in a lot of pain and volunteers can help insure these people are looked after quickly by getting them access to liquids, food or medical attention."

So far, 775 people have signed up for the half marathon next month and 163 have entered the 4.3-mile fun run and two-mile dash.

The Evening Advertiser has teamed up with Swindon Council and Nationwide to organise the event, which is aimed at all abilities.

It will be first time in almost 20 years that a running event of this scale has been held in the town. All money raised will go to Age Concern Swindon, the Swindon Cancer Appeal, the NSPCC and the GWR Community Trust.

The 13.1-mile half marathon will take in meadows around Liddington and Wanborough while the two short courses will be held at Coate Water.

And, to ensure runners are given an accurate timing, special microchips, which are attached to running shoes will be dished out.

Everyone who takes part will receive a medal and a T-shirt and there will be entertainment and refres-hments.

For an application form visit www.swindonhalfmarathon.co.uk to download one or pick one up from Swindon leisure centres or the Tourist Information Centre.

The closing date is October 4 and applications will not be taken on the day.

The cost is: half marathon £12 or £11 for running club members; 4.3-mile fun run, £5; two-mile fun run, £3. A 50p reduction is available to holders of a Swindon Card.

To register as a volunteer phone (01793) 464754 between 9am and 2pm Monday to Friday or email brawlings@swindon.gov.uk.
