September 30 2004: RUNNERS are being urged not to overdo training for next month's half-marathon. So far, more than 1,000 people have signed up to take part in the 13-mile run, which takes place on October 17.

But if you are thinking of entering then time is running out.

Although 2,000 places are still available for the run - the town's first half-marathon - race director Peter Robertson says anyone interested should get their skates on.

No-one will be allowed to enter on the day.

He said: "All runners will be given a microchip. These will accurately record times. In order for this to work we have set a deadline of October 4."

Organisers have, however, decided to scrap the deadline for those wanting to take part in the two smaller runs of 4.3 miles and two miles.

Runners will be allowed to turn up on the day.

And while Mr Robinson, wants to see entrants taking their training seriously, he doesn't want people collapsing from exhaustion through over-the-top fitness regimes.

"People should listen to their body," he said. "They know better than anyone if they are capable of doing this event.

"Certainly, anyone who hasn't started training by now shouldn't attempt it."

Mr Robertson advised runners to scrap the so-called "magic potions" and instead drink as much water as possible.

He said: "They should forget about dipping into all these jars that on the market at the moment and just concentrate on keeping themselves hydrated both in training and on the day itself.

"Our aim is to have a fun and enjoyable day while raising money for charity - it doesn't matter where you finish.

"The important thing is taking part. Everyone who takes part will receive a t-shirt and a medal - regardless of their finish position."

Meanwhile, Olympic runner Matt O'Dowd has now confirmed that he will be taking part in the half-marathon.

The 28-year-old from Rodbourne became a local hero after completing the gruelling 26-mile marathon at last month's Olympic games in Greece. Entry costs £12 for the half-marathon, or £11 for running club members.

It costs £5 to enter the 4.3-mile fun run and £3 for the two-mile jog.

Swindon Card holders are entitled to a 50p reduction.
