Bailiffs are being brought in as part of a clampdown on people who fail to pay their council tax.

West Wiltshire District Council has recruited an external bailiff service to help collect outstanding debts, in a bid to bring collection rates up to at least the national average.

In the last financial year 97.7 per cent of all council tax was collected in the district, compared to 97.8 per cent across the country as a whole.

Cllr Roy While, finance and performance portfolio holder for the council, said: "Our in-house team does an excellent job with debt collection, but there is a need for us to sharpen up our processes.

"Following discussion with other Wiltshire authorities it is clear that the additional revenue collected by them is achieved by using external bailiff services.

"We will be working in partnership with a neighbouring authority which already uses an external bailiff service and I am certain this will have a positive impact on our debt collection levels."
