WESTBURY United proved there is life after Toby Colbourne on Saturday as they eased to their second consecutive victory and their first league win since the middle of August.

Colbourne had been top scorer at Meadow Lane for the past two seasons and his switch to Corsham Town at the end of last week was a bitter blow for a United side already short of confidence.

But after scraping to a 4-3 extra time victory over Elmore in the FA Vase the previous weekend goals from Wayne Wheeler and Jerad O'Pray on Saturday ensured the post-Colbourne era started on a high.

Westbury were strongly tipped to be challenging for promotion from Division One this season, and despite a slow start that has seen them pick up just eight points from eight league matches, the signs are the corner is being turned.

Manager Derek Graham said: "Maybe Toby's departure is a blessing is disguise.

"My problem in the last few weeks has been trying to field a side to include our four top strikers.

"If I had dropped one of them they could well have left anyway so Toby made my decision for me. We looked to have a lot more balance on Saturday.

"We could have scored a lot more and what was very pleasing was the fact we kept a clean sheet. Hopefully we have started a better run now."

In Colbourne's absence, Matty Bown played upfront alongside Wayne Wheeler, with Jerad O'Pray on the right and Lee Carpenter on the left.

With their wind at their backs Westbury started brightly and on three minutes Wheeler struck a 25-yard shot that cannoned off the cross bar with keeper Richard Keith well beaten.

Saltash were struggling to contain the visitors and on 17 minutes Keith produced a double save to deny Bown and then Mark Pearce.

As the ball was scrambled away Carpenter aimed a deep cross to the far post that Keith just managed to turn away and to his relief Bown struck the rebound into the side netting.

Wheeler broke the deadlock on 24 minutes when he converted O'Pray's right wing cross, albeit via deflection.

After the break Saltash enjoyed more of the possession but the recalled Lewis Porter comfortably dealt with everything thrown at him in the Westbury goal.

Westbury made the game safe on 76 minutes when Wheeler led a counter attack.

Matt Windsor showed great strength to hold the ball up and O'Pray unleashed a fierce 20 yard shot into the top corner.
