Would you be kind enough to print this warning to the people of Westbury and surrounding area.

As tenants of an MoD farm on the edge of Salisbury Plain we have been informed that Lafarge wish to extend their quarry both into the ranges and taking land we rent called Winkland Down.

This land would encroach towards the recreation area of the White Horse.

We feel members of the public should be aware of what could happen if the permission goes unchallenged.

Plans are on view at the present time and specifically on Thursday and Friday October 14 and 15 from 4-8pm and Saturday October 16, 10am-1 pm at the works' social club at Lafarge Cement factory.

Letters of objection should then be sent to the Wiltshire County Council and not West Wiltshire District Council.

When a planning application was made in 1978 objections from the CPRE were that it was opposed to it on the grounds that it came too close to the amenity area of Winkland Down known as the recreation area of the White Horse.

At present, local residents and visitors have the third most popular venue in Wiltshire.

Over the Easter period there were in the region of 800 people with cars enjoying the location.

There is no admittance fee and the venue is used for ball games, kite flying, model aircraft, horse riding, para and hang gliding, dog walkers and ramblers.

The site has been used for beacons to commemorate many historical events.

The same argument for retaining the existing fields is as appropriate today as it was in 1978.

A boundary change brought towards the White Horse seems dangerous and to the detriment of the general public's use. Landscaping takes many years to camouflage the quarry enlargement.

We hope that all those who benefit from the White Horse location will acquaint themselves with the issue and object accordingly.
