CHIPPENHAM NEWS: A STUDENT was mugged in an unprovoked daylight attack in Monkton Park on Monday afternoon.

The 17-year-old, from Chippenham, was punched in the face and had £40 in cash stolen from his bag at 2.40pm.

Two men were arrested in connection with the mugging but have been released pending further inquiries.

Police are now urging anyone who was in the busy Monkton Park at the time to come forward.

Det Con Alan Strike, of Chippenham CID, said: "At the moment we are not looking for anyone else in our inquiries.

"It is quite brazen to do this in daylight and is not a typical type of behaviour in Chippenham.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area of Monkton Park at the time.

"It's a popular place and time for dog walkers and it's quite possible people were walking through the park when this attack happened."

The attack took place between the Olympiad Leisure Centre and the Green Bridge leading into St Mary's Street.

The 17-year-old college student was walking through the park when he was approached by a man who engaged him in conversation.

He was then punched in the face and £40 in cash was stolen.

The mugger is described as black, around 5ft 8in tall and between 18 and 20 years old.

Anyone with any information on the attack should contact Chippenham CID.
