HURRAH! I'm normal - or, at least, average.

After years of studying diet plans (not actually cutting my calorie intake, just reading about it, you understand) and talking about joining a gym, I now find I don't have to.

I no longer need to strive to measure up to the Joneses because Mrs Jones is not only the same size as me, she's possibly a tad thicker round the waist. Size UK, a three-year collaboration between the department of trade and industry and leading British retailers and academics, has announced the finding of its first UK national sizing survey.

Using 1.5 million measurements from 11,000 people using body scanners, it reveals the average size of British women and shows how we have changed since 1951.

On average, we are 1in taller, just under 10lb heavier and bigger by 1in on the bust, a whopping 6in on the waist and 1in on the hips.

Forget Marilyn Monroe's hour-glass figure, Miss Average 2004 measures up at 38.5-34-40.5 (98-86-103cm) and weighs in at 10st 3lb (65 kg).

Pass me the choccie biscuits.
