BUSINESSES in Wiltshire are being urged to enter now for the chance of royal recognition with a Queen's Award for Enterprise.

The 2005 awards are in three categories international trade, innovation and sustainable development.

Only ten businesses in the Salisbury area have so far made applications and the deadline for entry is October 31.

Stephen Brice, acting secretary at the Queen's Awards office, said: "The number from Wiltshire is encouraging, but we would like to see more applying for this most prestigious of business accolades.

"Over the years there have been many winners from the south west and there is no reason why successful companies in Wiltshire shouldn't apply to join them.

"Unlike many awards, these recognise the contribution made by everyone involved and not just individuals. Winners say the award has enhanced their reputation at home and overseas and boosted staff morale.

"Add to this the positive publicity and the right to use the Queen's Award emblem in marketing, and the value of the award is really significant."
