GAZETTE & HERALD: POLICE are warning people to be on high alert when walking through Monkton Park after a string of muggings took place there in just one month.

Last week the Gazette reported the most recent attack, in which a 17-year-old Chippenham college student was left terrified after being punched in the face and robbed. This is the fourth incident in a month so police have asked people to be extra cautious when walking through the park.

Three weeks ago, another 17-year-old boy was assaulted on his way back from college. The attackers struck at the same time 3pm on a Monday afternoon.

The boy's grandmother, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, said: "More ought to be done to warn people of the dangers about walking through there. It's not a one off. It's happening a lot and people need to know about it."

Her grandson was approached by two black men who started to hassle him. He attempted to run away but they tripped him up.

"One sat on him while the other put the boot in," she said. "He got bruising to his head and back and he only had £5 and a mobile phone on him.

"We're still getting over it. The first couple of weeks he wouldn't go out on his own. He was frightened they would come after him."

Principal of Chippenham College, George Bright said: "Many students and staff use that route so we are very concerned about the incidents that have occurred there. We will be putting guidance out to students next week to ensure they don't use the route unaccompanied."

PC Rachael Jennings at Chippenham police, who is dealing with the robberies, added: "I would ask all people to be particularly vigilant and cautious if approached by a stranger. Please avoid showing valuables in public and carrying large amounts of cash.

If you see anybody acting in a suspiciously near Monkton Park, please call PC Jennings on (01249) 654455.
