Ex-Olympic swimmer Jaime King will be coming to Malmesbury Swimming Pool on Saturday to help raise money for Burton Hill School in their swimathon for a new school minibus.

As well as the Olympian, members of RAF Lyneham, the Army at Buckley Barracks and Malmesbury Marlins swimming group will help raise money.

The school for children with physical and associated learning disabilities encouraged their children to take part last Saturday in their ten-metre purpose built pool in the school grounds.

Kay O'Neill, the school's development officer, said the children's efforts were fantastic and that the school are delighted with the Olympian coming back to help the school.

"We are delighted because she (Jaime) was brilliant when she opened our fete and she's given us swimming things to give away in a raffle.

"Last Saturday we had our own children in our own pool which is for disabled children.

"It's just under ten metres but one boy did 102 lengths of the pool and he was supposed to do 50. He was so happy, he kept going."

Mrs O'Neill said the fundraising events are an ongoing thing.

"We are trying to replace our old school minibus.

"We have £10,000 so far and we have £22,000 left to get.

"We are hoping for £5,000 to £6,000 from the swimathons."

Mrs O'Neill also thanked Malmesbury Swimming Pool on Bremilham Road for allowing the school to use their activity zone periods between 5pm and 7pm on Saturdays.

The school has been down one minibus since April and cost more because they are converted for wheelchair access.

"We think it will be next year by the time the money is raised. We have several events coming up and a group at Kemble Airfield are running a fashion show," Mrs O'Neill said.

"At the moment some of our youngsters aren't going on as many trips as they used to."
