MINETY Rugby Club postponed their game against Bournemouth on Saturday as a mark of respect after former player Philip Claxton died suddenly.

Claxton, 38, was playing on a golf course in Chipping Norton at a work event when he suffered a heart attack leaving rugby colleagues shocked.

Claxton, an honorary vice president of the club, has been described as the best wing forward to ever play for the club. He finished playing for Minety in 1993.

Dave Peirce, a friend and former club captain who played alongside Claxton for many years, said: "He was a very good rugby player, a good tackler and a good runner and scored numerous tries.

"If not the best back row we've had at the club he's one of the best. If you speak to anyone else they will say the same.

"He scored a try once that was not a try but which was on the 22-metre line and when he turned round and put his hands up and cheered we were like 'great but you've got another 22 metres to go mate.'

"He was one of the nicest blokes and will be sadly missed by all."

A statement from Minety Rugby Club said: "The committee and members of Minety Rugby Club were deeply saddened this week to learn of the sudden death of former first team flanker Philip Claxton at the young age of 38.

"Out of respect for his memory, it was decided to postpone this weekend's scheduled first team fixture against Bournemouth, which will now be played next Saturday.

"All at Minety RFC extend their condolences to Philip's family and friends."

The Southern Counties South League game will now take place this Saturday at Chapel Gate, Bournemouth with kick off at 3pm.
