TROWBRIDGE cricket club chairman Brian Scrine is unsure whether he will bid to host a Wiltshire match again after losing the battle for next year's C and G Trophy tie to South Wilts.

Scrine was disappointed with the decision to give Wiltshire's first round tie against Kent to the Salisbury-based South Wilts and admitted he would have to "seriously consider whether to try for another."

He said: "Obviously I am disappointed about it. I thought we had the facilities and ground to hold it but it appears not.

"I was not totally surprised by the decision to give it to South Wilts though because we were fighting a losing battle with Wiltshire's captain Russell Rowe and match manager Brian White coming from there.

"I am not sure whether we would try to host one in the future. It is something we would need to think about."

"I would like to point out that Trowbridge is the County Ground of Wiltshire and in very good condition. We had 100 per cent backing from Westbury, who offered help in anyway possible for us to stage this game.

"We have not had an official letter from Wiltshire but maybe this is the way things are done."

White said the committee believed South Wilts was the best venue for the tie, to be held on either May 3 or May 4.

He said: "It has been one of the leading grounds in the county for several years and we feel it is the right decision.

"The committee met with South Wilts on Wednesday night and we have now agreed terms with them and are looking forward to the match."

The other club in the running for the match was Westbury, who hosted last year's wash out against Nottinghamshire, but chairman Neil Hawker was not surprised by the outcome.

He said: "It was expected. We never held out any hope of hosting it and it was obvious from day one that it would go to South Wilts.

"Westbury backed Trowbridge's bid because we felt their ground should have been given the match.

"It is the larger ground and the county ground but because people from South Wilts are on the committee of Wiltshire it was always going to go to them."

Russell Rowe has been reappointed Wiltshire captain for the 2005 season for the third successive campaign.

The burly South Wilts batsman missed a few matches last season through injury and when he did play he failed to meet his usual high standards.

Rowe played four matches for the county in which he had seven innings and scored a total of 69 runs. His highest score was 30 and he averaged only 11.5.

White said: "He hasn't had the best of seasons but a large part of that was because he has been quite ill.

"In the seasons he has captained us we have been successful and we all think he is still the best man for the job. Towards the end of last season his form picked up for South Wilts and he has said he will work hard to try and get himself fit."
