MALMESBURY town councillors are trying to improve the communication process between them and their constituents by holding face-to-face surgeries.

The sessions start on November 6 in the town hall between 10am and 11.30am, with two councillors attending each of the eight planned sessions.

The idea emerged after Malmesbury Town Council Review Group identified communication as an area that could be improved last June.

Over 50 per cent of respondents said they wanted a greater say in all decision-making affecting Malmesbury.

Councillors now hope this new initiative will encourage a more collaborative and open approach to local politics.

Mayor Patrick Goldstone said it was important for councillors to make themselves available.

Coun Goldstone said: "We have been criticised for not listening to local people so we hope these sessions will be an outlet for people to get involved.

"We are making ourselves available. As councillors we get a lot of e-mails and calls but this is another way for us to connect with people. We will see how it goes."

Councillor Brian Denley said he hoped people would use the chance to voice their concerns.

Coun Denley said: "We have tried this kind of thing in the past but nobody turned up. I am all for this new idea.

"I think we will have more people turning up than before and certainly I expect those that have a grudge against the council will attend. It is worth a try and we will have to see how it goes."

Town clerk Phil Rice said the council was trying to improve to meet people's needs and communication was integral to this. He urged people to turn up on the day. For more information call (01666) 822413.
