DOES anyone actually think the so called Chip and PIN is safer than just signing for your goods when paying by debit or credit card?
The problem is having to tap your PIN onto a pad in full view of the checkout operator, other customers, security staff, even perhaps, someone looking in through the shop window.
It only takes one less than honest person. They don't even have to see the number, just the pattern of your fingers on the pad is enough.
And once they have your PIN then they need only steal your card to gain access to your bank account, something virtually impossible if you just sign the bill.
Yes, I use my PIN in the bank, but can usually stand close enough to the machine so as to block the view of others. This will be impossible in the average shop.
It must not be made compulsory until a much safer method of operation is worked out.
