ONE in five vacuum cleaners sold in America is a Dyson.

Tycoon James Dyson has confirmed his revolutionary bagless machines have conquered the US two years after going on sale.

It has overtaken Hoover after sales more than tripled in 2004 to 891,000.

Dyson employs 1,200 people at its Malmesbury headquarters although all manufacture was transferred to Malaysia in 2002 when 500 jobs were cut.

Profits soared to £102.9 million last year up from £43.1 million in 2003 as Mr Dyson prepared for another bumper dividend payout to mark his success.

The entrepreneur and his wife Deirdre paid themselves a £17 million bonus.
