TOWN boss Kelvin Highmore has his sights set on knocking Radstock out of the title race by winning their top of the table clash on Tuedsay night.

A goal from Ben Moore and two from striker Glenn Armstrong, who was making his 100th appearance for the club, gave Calne the three points against first division strugglers Chard on Saturday.

The win leaves Highmore's men just three points behind the leading two, despite have played three games less than leaders Willand Rovers and four less than second-placed Radstock.

Highmore hopes a wins at home to Shrewton United on Saturday and at Radstock on Tuesday will give them a psychological edge and leave the fellow title hopefuls with too much to do.

He said: "It is in our hands but we have two massive games coming up. Six points out of those and we put ourselves in a great position with games in hand."

But Highmore is worried that a fixture pile-up and extended injury list could make things difficult for his team.

Calne still have 16 games left to play this season and do not want too add to their growing list of casualties.

Striker Matt Pratley has an injured back and the manager is not sure how long the forward, who was linked with a move to Swindon Supermarine this season, will be sidelined for.

Midfielder Danny Jones Fell awkwardly in a tackle from a Chard player and has broke his wrist. He is in plaster and will be missing for at least a month.

On the bright side, striker Gary Banks has recovered form a foot injury and should return against Shrewton.

"The fixture pileup could be my downfall, there is a long way to go but if you were a betting man, your money would be on us."

To try and solve the injury crisis Highmore is attempting to prise star man Luke Gullick from Biddestone.

On Saturday Highmore put in a seven day transfer request for the player who last week spent a week's trial at League Two side Oxford Town.

Calne picked up two injuries from Saturday's game, which Highmore described as vicious as he accused Chard of adopting ruthless tactics.

"They tried to kick us off the pitch, there were some tasty tackles flying in,'' he said.

"The problem we have now is that everyone wants to beat us, Chard came here and tried to kill us."

After 45 minutes of tough tackling the first half was goalless with the only talking point being a skirmish between Paul Henbest and Ryan Pratley. After consulting his linesman the referee sent Henbest off for a harsh elbow on Pratley.

With a man advantage Calne took just two minutes of the second half to race into the lead. Some nice work by Ben Highmore gave Moore space to run, the left-winger ran the ball to the edge of the penalty area and rifled in a blistering shot with his right foot from 20 yards.

With 20 minutes left Highmore was again the provider when his superb flick on fell to Armstrong, who marked his 100th appearance with a hooked shot that almost burst the back of the net.

Armstrong had the final say in the match when he made it three for Calne on the stroke of full-time.

He powered on to a pass from midfielder James Lye, shrugged off two defenders to strike in a left foot shot from ten yards out.

That was the hitman's 20th of the season making him the most effective striker in the Screwfix First Division.

Keeper Gareth Evans completed his eighth clean sheet for Calne since his switch from Melksham this season.

Highmore added: "Gareth has been magnificent for us this season.

"He took over after the last game against Radstock.

"I don't think it is consequence that we have not been beaten in the league since.

"He has had a major influence on the team and has done superbly since he came here."
