DEVIZES Town players were so ashamed of their performance in Saturday's 6-2 drubbing at home by bottom side Clyst Rover, they decided they did not deserve their wages.

After the humiliating defeat assistant manager John Freegard told his players to collect their wages only if they felt they deserved to do so.

None of them went forward to claim their cash.

Chairman Phil Rossiter said: "Even I thought to myself that I did not want to pay them after that display, there were no positives to take from the match.

"But in fairness not one player thought they deserved to be paid and no one has asked me for their wages and I admire them for that."

The chairman spoke to a few players and they told him that they did not want their wages after the game.

It was rumoured that captain Brad Newman was the only player who went to the chairman and asked for his money.

But he said he was just talking to Rossiter about travelling expenses owed to him from the Backwell game the week before.

Newman said: "Everybody was upset with themselves. I don't think anyone played well enough to collect their wages."

The result angered the captain, who hopes his side will get back to the form that saw them come away from Back with all three points.

He said: "It was such a contrast from the Backwell game. For some strange reason we started slowly.

"We managed to get back into it and should have picked up our game, but we let it slip.

"The game was poor defensively for both sides. No one had to work for their goals.

"We all accepted that we did not warrant any wages for that game. It was strange, I can't put my finger on why we did so badly."

Assistant manager John Freegard said: "On behalf of the management team however I would like to apologise to the supporters and committee for what must be the worst performance seen at Devizes for years."
