A FARMER fed up with vehicles crashing through his hedgerow believes it is only a matter of time before there is a fatality.

Keith Tucker, 53, of Manor Farm, Bradford Road, Holt, said he offered Wiltshire County Council a strip of his land last year to widen the road but has heard nothing since.

Despite recent resurfacing work, Mr Tucker claimed the B3107 is dangerously narrow in places and a 60mph speed limit exacerbates the problem.

He has asked the county council to act, saying either the road should be widened or the speed limit reduced.

He said: "The traffic count for Holt is 10,000-12,000 cars a day (figures taken by the parish council). It's becoming a death trap. Over the last two or three years traffic has got faster and faster.

"I have been here all my life and as the traffic has increased, it has got faster, hence more accidents."

Mr Tucker said as part of the deal, the county council improved visibility on the entrance to his driveway, but could not understand why they had not carried out the rest of the work.

"I don't want to be seen as knocking the council but I'm seriously concerned," he said.

"I think when they resurfaced the road they should have approached the landowners

and asked them if they could have widened the road because

it would not have needed much land. There is a possibility the landowners would have accepted that."

But Wiltshire County Council denied any such deal had been struck.

A spokesman said: "The engineer says we have not been offered any land.

"The work we have done is to improve the visibility with the footpath that crosses the road, but it was not on his land, it was on public highway.

"We did do some work which was agreed by Keith Tucker, to do with visibility for pedestrians using a right of way crossing the road.

"If Mr Tucker has other

concerns about the highway adjoining his property, he should contact the county council to discuss these with our highways staff."

Holt parish councillor Martin Moyes, who is on the traffic sub-committee, said: "It's very narrow through Holt, and if you park a car along the side of the road it's likely you will have your mirror knocked off.

"It's getting worse I think. The real problem is trucks and we were hoping that once the Semington bypass was opened the HGVs would go down that road."
