A LISTED thatched cottage in Easterton, near Devizes, was destroyed by fire on Saturday, despite the rapid response from local firefighters.
High View, a Grade II listed building in Oak Lane, Easterton was reduced to a smoking ruin after the blaze broke out at about 11am on Saturday morning.
The owner, Robert Trevis, alerted the emergency services after a fire in his inglenook hearth set the chimney alight.
But, despite the best efforts of fire crews, the thatch caught fire and by midday the whole roof was ablaze.
Philippa Stearn and her son Peter, who own The Maltings next door to High View, which is also thatched, arrived from their other home in London to see their lane filled with fire engines.
