Residents grassed up local youths after we highlighted problems at Highworth library as part of the It's Your Call campaign.

Police have arrested four teenagers following a spate of anti-social behaviour.

Although the youngsters have not been charged in connection with the library, problems there have eased since the arrests.

One boy has been charged with assault after a Warneford School caretaker was shot in the back with a ball bearing gun. Another has been charged with smashing a window at G and L Evans Family Funeral Services in Newburgh Place and two more have been charged with setting a car on fire.

PC Martin Miles, of Highworth police, praised residents for standing up for their communities.

"The article had a positive effect, and made people sit up and think," he said.

"They gave us names of the four we charged. A lot of people said they saw the report, and many parents were disgusted because they didn't know things were so bad.

"It just shows if we work together we can tackle the problem."

Two weeks ago, we reported how hordes of rowdy teenagers were congregating in the library entrance hall, causing mayhem and hurling abuse at users.

Jenny Selwood, who has managed the library for 12 years, is delighted the yobs have dispersed.

"I'm very relieved," she said.

"Things have definitely got better over the past couple of weeks. It means we can get on with what we are paid to do serve the public."

The Adver-backed It's Your Call hotline has struck another victory in the drive to make Swindon a better place to live.

Two weeks ago, we revealed how beggars had started loitering in the town centre again.

Town centre managers urged shoppers to donate cash to charity rather than to beggars.

Bernie McGuire, town centre manager, said: "We've definitely had fewer complaints about begging since the article, which is good news for the town centre."
