To save £40,000, Swindon Council is to begin charging disabled people to park in the Brunel North and West and Fleming Way car parks from April 3.

Carol Day, 59, of Stratton, who has a spine and a heart problem and walks with a stick, was outraged when she heard about the change.

"We can park on yellow lines but I consider myself a considerate parker," she said. "I only park on double yellow lines if I really have to because if we all did it, it would clog up the streets.

"But I think that is what we should do. We should organise ourselves into a protest group and do it, then they would have to listen to us."

Mrs Day's husband Brian, her niece Sarah, 34, and her neighbour Gillian Wright are also disabled.

Coun Jemima Milton (Con, Wroughton & Chiseldon), lead member for environment and transport, said the council did not want to make money out of disabled people. But allowing free parking in the barrier operated car parks meant they had to be manned at all times so staff could let disabled people out, she said.

Anyone who wants to join Mrs Day in a protest at the charges should contact her on 01793 823943.
