TRAFFIC police in Wiltshire are urging motorcyclists to take extra care on the roads at the start of the season.

Many bikes are taken off the road for the winter and now, as the good weather approaches, riders are asked to properly prepare themselves and their machines.

Police say the bikes should be thoroughly checked with particular attention to tyres, chains and lighting.

Historically, the county has a high level of motorcycle casualties, particularly in April.

A police spokesman said: "Every year bikes get faster and the roads get more crowded. Riders need to be sharper, more aware and at the top of the game."

In line with Department of Transport targets, Wiltshire police is working to reduce collisions. Its 'Bikesafe' scheme, launched in Wiltshire in 1999, lets riders spend a day with the county's expert police riders, pictured.
