IN response to Harry Fitchett's letter, I have every sympathy with anyone who has suffered due to poor policing and low crime detection rates.

What I find hard to understand is the argument that people fought in the war in order to allow people the freedom to kill animals for fun or torture animals in the name of vivisection.

My grandfather and father were soldiers in the respective world wars and I was a career soldier myself. I cannot remember joining up in order to protect the freedom of people who abuse animals.
