A GROUP of Salvation Army volunteers from Swindon have raised around £1,000 for charity after cycling over London's bridges.

The 11 members of the Gorse Hill citadel were among 2,200 people taking part in the Thames Bridges Bike Ride. The 32-mile ride over and around London's bridges is now in its tenth year. The event is in aid of the Stroke Association, and the group were inspired to take part by their colleague Dave Diston who survived a stroke three years ago and has gone on to become a regular fundraiser.

David Coates, one of the group, said: "It went really well. The weather was kind in that it kept dry and breezy. All 11 of us finished in about four hours, which was very good.

"We started at about 9am by Tower Bridge and finished just after 1pm in Hurst Park near Hampton Court, and we were all given a medal.

"The whole event was very well organised. We have raised around £1,000. Each participant was expected to raise at least £65 but we must have got a lot more than that. Our legs ached a bit but we were able to take it at our own pace, which helped.

"Everybody in the group wants to do it again next year."

It's not too late to contribute to the cyclists' efforts. Anyone interested can contact them on 01793 531107.
