ROYAL Mail is failing to hit its target for the delivery of first class post. Figures released this week show 90.2 per cent of first class mail in the BA postcode area, which includes Trowbridge, Warminster, Westbury and Bradford on Avon is being delivered the next day.

The national target is 92.5 per cent and the minimum target for the postcode area is 91 per cent.

The figures have improved for 2004/5 compared to the previous year, when 88.8 per cent of first class mail arrived the next day.

Charles Howeson, chairman of postwatch South and West, said: "Royal Mail's service is improving and this is to be welcomed, the management and workforce should be congratulated for what they have achieved.

"There remain, however, some areas throughout the south and west where the first class post service does not meet the postcode area target and therefore needs to improve further.
