WOOTTON Bassett went to the top of Division One of the Wiltshire Cricket League after a narrow last-over victory against Bath Civil Service, and their nearest rivals, Great Bedwyn, lost at Westinghouse.

Bassett moved above Bedwyn following their two-wicket home success against Bath Civil Service.

The Civil Service were dismissed for 136 as Sam Carrow took 4-44 in 10.1 overs.

Bassett were then in deep trouble at 65-8 before Rod Smith, 25 not out, and Bobby Sayeed, 38 not out, added an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 75 to see them home with four balls to spare.

Chris Kille with 4-16 in 12 overs did most of the damage early on.

Great Bedwyn lost ground as they suffered a 52-run defeat at Westinghouse. The home side, thanks to Paul Bailey's 65 not out, made 200-9.

John Cleverley then took 3-46 in 12 overs and Sam Dix 3-11 as Bedwyn were bowled out for 148 with nine overs to spare (Alan Turnell 47).

Leaders Purton's game at Calne suffered from the weather, the game being abandoned with Calne 40-1.

This left Purton one point behind Bassett, with Bedwyn a further four points adrift.

Lechlade, after their disastrous run of six consecutive defeats, finally got back to winning ways as they defeated visiting Box by three wickets.

With Tony Trotman carrying his bat for 72 not out, Box closed on 174-9. Despite Neil Pettit then taking 3-24 in 11 overs, Wayne Bambrick (34 not out), Roger Pettifer (29) and Paul Godding (29) helped Lechlade to victory with five overs to spare.

DIVISION TWO

Potterne extended their lead as nearest rivals Nationwide House had their game at Urchfont abandoned.

Nationwide had scored 221-7, but six overs in to Urchfont's reply the rains intervened.

Potterne restricted visiting Seagry to 126-8 with Alex Fereday scoring a valuable 68 as Ricky Jackson took 3-23 in 12 overs and Fred Kerley 3-28 in 12. A half-century from Phil Oliver and Paul Clarke's 37 then set Potterne on the way to a five-wicket victory with 13 overs to spare.

Buscot Park's position is beginning to look precarious as they lost to Cooper-Avon Tyres by four wickets.

Buscot scored 151 all out, for which they had Ronny Fernandez to thank with a gritty 65 not out. Dean Wallington with 5-32 in 8.3 overs and Rich Jory 2-28 in 10 did the damage.

Garry Burns (34) and Steve Rendell (29) then helped Cooper-Avon to victory with overs to spare.

Another rain-affected game was at Sutton Veny where visitors Blunsdon had made 222 all out and Sutton Veny had reached 22-0 in reply when the heavens opened.

The Avebury-Swindon Civil Service match was another to succumb to the conditions.

DIVISION THREE

Moredon Royal Oak moved into a clear second place after a 32-run home success in a low-scoring encounter with lowly Beanacre.

Moredon were bowled out for 104, (Tim Saint 24, Alan Story 3-20 in 12 overs and Steve Cameron 4-26 in 7.4).

Beanacre then collapsed to 72 all out (Tom MacMullan 21 not out) as Ian Morton, 5-25 in 11 overs, and Phil Morton, 3-22 in 12, did the damage.

Swindon 3rd visited Cherhill and scored 203-5, with Nick Parkinson 49 and Colin Iles 53 not out. Cherhill in reply had made 56-2 from 15 overs when the rain intervened.

Lowly Lambourn entertained Wanborough, and batting first scored 184-9 (Garry Waterson 44, Stuart Annetts 34 not out, Ian Hobbs 28 and Nick Giddings 28) while Andy Thompson took 3-31 in six overs.

Thanks to Nick Stevens with 68, Tom Clinning with 30, Dave Cox (22 not out) and Garry Woodward (26 not out), Wanborough went on to win by four wickets with five balls to spare, Steve Mundy taking 3-35 in 12 overs for Lambourn.

DIVISION FOUR

Bradford Town maintained their grip on second place following a seven-wicket victory at Bathford in a rain-affected game.

Bathford scored 112 all out (Ken Rivington 22) as James Harrington took 5-24 in 8.1 overs.

Set a target after rain of 85 in 30 overs, Bradford scored 85-3 in 18.3 overs, thanks to Tony Laws with 32 not out, and Tom Edwards with 23 not out.

Nationwide House 2nd are third as they defeated visiting Keevil by eight wickets.

Tim Roslin (28) top-scored in a Keevil total of 133 all out as Andy Lewis took 3-29 in 12 overs and Nigel Stone wrapped up the tail with 3-0 in 2.3 overs.

Darren Milne (57) and Mark Tuton (37 not out) then helped Nationwide to victory with 11 overs remaining.

Highworth sprang something of a surprise as they won for only the second time, a 14-run success against visiting Heytesbury.

Highworth scored 150-9 (Des Batchelor 29, Ken Blundell 25) while Roy Jelf took 3-22 and Paul Ackworth 3-33 in 12 overs for Heytesbury.

Chris Sloane with 31 then top- scored as Heytesbury were bowled out for 136, Geoff Halls 3-10 and Shaun Gibson 3-24 doing the damage.

DIVISION FIVE

With leaders Wootton Bassett 2nd's game at Warminster 3rd being abandoned, Chippenham 3rd opened up a 14-point lead as they comfortably defeated hosts, Buscot Park 2nd.

Chippenham scored 281-2 thanks to centuries from Ray Bullen (132) and Richy Harrison (104).

They then bowled Buscot out for 66 (Garry Els 30) as Chris Day took 4-7 in eight overs and Nick Day 3-27 in 6.4.

United Churches broke their losing run with a 10-run home win over Devizes 3rd. They scored 141 all out with Richard Tong (37) and Andy Foster (34) top scoring.

Devizes were then dismissed for 131 in the 42nd over, Alan Jones taking 3-43 in nine overs.

DIVISION SIX

The leading duo continue to march remorselessly onwards to promotion.

Leaders Bradford Town 2nd scored 238-8 at home to Calne 2nd. Mark Mullis (66) and Dan Nicholls (41) were the chief run getters, Dan Holcombe taking 3-43 in 10 overs for Calne.

The visitors were then bowled out for 79 with Mullis rounding off a fine all round performance as he took 6-29 in 11.5 overs.

Second-placed All Cannings made 238-3 and then bowled struggling Westbury 3rd out for just 73.

The leaders both gained ground with these victories, as their nearest challengers, Box 2nd and Lacock, who were due to meet, had their match rained off.

Also affected by the weather was the game at Burbage & ER 2nd, who were entertaining Trowbridge A.

Burbage had made 281-6, thanks to a fine 117 from Paul Lavis. Bob Cady then picked up four quick wickets for 17 in six overs before

rain brought proceedings to a halt, with Trowbridge struggling on 53-4 after 12 overs.

Cooper-Avon Tyres 2nd gained only their second win of the campaign as they defeated hosts and fellow strugglers Goatacre 3rd by five wickets.

Goatacre were bowled out for 110 (Brian Piercey 32) as Barry Steggall took 3-26 in 9.2 overs and Keith Wallington 3-33 in 12.

With Steve Tangir scoring 31, Cooper-Avon gained their victory with 13 overs to spare.

DIVISION SEVEN

The leading duo, Dauntsey Gentlemen and Biddestone 3rd, took advantage of nearest challengers Corsham 3rd's game against Marshfield 3rd being cancelled to extend their lead.

At bottom club Beanacre 2nd, the home side entertained Biddestone and were bowled out for 113, with Doug Miller taking 4-15 in 9.1 overs and Sam Boor 3-21 in five. Biddestone, thanks to Phil Boor's 49 and Josh Barnes' 29 not out, then went on to win by seven wickets, knocking the runs off in 22 overs.

Dauntsey Gentlemen recovered from last week's hiccup to defeat visiting Collingbourne 2nd by 44 runs.

Dauntsey scored 180 all out with Don Sharratt scoring 58 and Bill Scotford 46.

Despite Mike Avril with 45 and Steve Knight's 43, Collingbourne were bowled out for 136.

Bath Civil Service were going well at home to Wootton Bassett 3rd, having made 145-4 in 33.3 overs before the rain intervened.

DIVISION EIGHT

Leaders Swindon 4th strengthened their hold on the leadership with a convincing home win against Bathford 2nd.

Swindon scored 163-6, mainly thanks to Phil Laggett's 93 not out. Bathford then collapsed to 50 all out as Darryl Alton took 3-13 in 12 overs and Stanley Vas 2-12 in six.

North Bradley visited Spye Park 2nd and were bowled out for 151 with Shaun Brown (42) their top scorer.

Spye then struggled for runs against some accurate bowling and despite 55 not out from Dave Russell, ended at 103-7.

Warminster 4th visited Trowbridge B and were bowled out for 110.

In a rain-affected game, Trowbridge were set a target of 62 in 25 overs, and knocked the runs off in 14 overs for the loss of one wicket.
