Geoff Fisher, the victim of a hit-and-run incidentWAR veteran Geoff Fisher has urged decent-thinking people to shop a hit-and-run driver who left him for dead in the road.

The 79-year-old from Wootton Bassett is recovering at home after he was mown down by a silver Ford Focus yards from his bungalow.

Police released CCTV images of the incident, which happened at 9pm on Thursday, July 14.

But so far the reaction from the public has been disappointing, and police say that they need much more help to track down the person who drove into him.

Last week the grandfather-of-four a former wartime submariner was discharged from Great Western Hospital.

Mr Fisher, who served with the British Pacific Fleet between 1942 and 1945, cannot recall the accident.

"All I can remember is waking up in hospital a short time after the accident," he said.

"I was walking over to Coped Hall Service Station to buy something when I was hit."

Mr Fisher, who drives lorries for a local gardening firm, wants the offender brought to justice.

"I am not an angry man but I would like to see this person caught and brought to justice," he said.

"I can only assume that he failed to stop because the car was stolen or not insured."

Mr Fisher also wants traffic calming measures imposed in the Coped Hall area of the market town.

"For years we have been moaning about the speed limit on this road," he said.

"We want it lowered from 60mph to 40mph.

"Cars go thundering down here."

The proud holder of a Burma Star medal is also well-known in local football circles, not long retiring as a Wiltshire FA referee.

"I am quite a fit man so I want to get better quickly.

"I only stopped refereeing when I was 75," he said.

PC George Rabczak urged anyone with information to get in touch.

He said: "It is unfortunate the CCTV pictures have not stirred the conscience of the driver."

Speaking just after the accident, wife Mary said she wanted the driver punished.

"He's a downright criminal and I hope he gets hung, drawn and quartered," she said.

Do you know the identity of the hit-and-run motorist or give police any information on the incident?
