WHILE I am glad the IRA has signalled an end to armed conflict I do not share the general euphoria surrounding the statement issued by their spokesman.
A statement signalling an end to violence has been made before and yet violence continued albeit under a different name the reality is that Provisional, Real or Continuity all are the IRA.
Reading the full text I note the IRA spokesman differentiates between volunteers and soldiers of the IRA can we take this to mean that the paid troops will continue to bear arms and be prepared to act under orders from the IRA high command. Finally, isn't it a sad indictment that Tony Blair feels a general amnesty is acceptable for those who have murdered innocent people but who are on the run from justice.
