A CRISIS meeting to discuss the future of north Wiltshire's mobile skate park was held yesterday.

Officers of North Wiltshire District Council met the partners in the project to discuss how to keep the scheme going and improve the number of people using it.

The skate park will not be closed according to officers at the council, who said they were meeting to decide on ways to improve its popularity.

One said that the various branches involved would be working hard to make it a success in the future.

North Wiltshire District Council has admitted that the project has been plagued with a range of difficulties during its short existence.

The numbers of young people using the skate park has been causing concern to the council, with fewer people using it than it had hoped.

There have also been a number of staffing issues, with a recent advert attracting only one applicant.

Shortly after opening, the John Bentley School in Calne questioned whether the council had the right to use the White Horse Leisure Centre car park, situated next to the school, as it believed it owned part of it.

Although the school has never agreed to allow the skate park to operate, the district council does own all of the car park at the leisure centre and has been operating the scheme there on Tuesday and Friday evenings.

Leisure and community facilities officer, Bee Lewis, said that although the park has been a great success in Purton, it was not doing so well in other areas.

She said: "Logistically it has been quite difficult to operate.

"The takeup hasn't been as good as we would have liked in some areas."

The skate park, called Raw Meet!, has been in use for only two months after opening on June 1.

There is no designated area where youngsters in many parts of north Wiltshire can skate.

The project is seen as vital by the various partners to provide youngsters with a place to enjoy their hobby, without disturbing residents and pedestrians.
