Carers Dawn Stagg and Mary Colanis walk the towpath (16821/9) CARERS Mary Colanis and Dawn Stagg hope a sponsored walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath will raise about £400 for the Prospect Hospice.

The pair who work for the Mobile care Agency in Marlborough walked seven-and-half miles from Burbage Wharf to Pewsey on Friday.

Mrs Stagg, a care co-ordinator, who lives in Marlborough said: "It was Mary's idea because she thinks so much of the work of the Prospect Hospice that she wanted to do something to help it."

Sponsorship came from their colleagues both at Marlborough and at the agency's head offices in Melksham, from friends and relatives and from work colleagues at Les Gowing House in Swindon of Mrs Colanis' husband Kevin.

Mr Colanis provided the back-up for the two women during their walk, meeting them at pre-arranged points with refreshments. Mother-of-four Mrs Stagg said: "The conditions were ideal, not too hot and not too cold."

The women were surprised when they finished the walk rather sooner than expected and reached Pewsey Wharf just two hours after leaving Burbage.

They will be visiting the hospice at Wroughton to hand over their cash on Tuesday.
