FLOWER borders were cossetted and lawns perfected in readiness for last week's judging in the Bassett in Bloom competition.

Competitors now eagerly await the results. Judging took place on a rainy day last week with the judges inspecting more than 30 gardens and displays across the town.

The panel, made up of mayor and mayoress Chris and Audrey Wannell, and MP James Gray took photographs of all competing gardens and will now scrutinise their findings in time for an announcement sometime next week.

Mrs Wannell said: "The rain did upset some of the gardens and some of the flowers were a little spoilt but it was the same for everyone.

She said: "The competition is really about making people take pride in their gardens."

There was also an inspection of Christmas trees last week as representatives from the town council visited Longleat to select the town's two trees ready for the Christmas Lights evening in December. Two 25ft trees were selected which will be positioned in pride of place either side of the town hall.
