Andrew Holloway was one of 500 contractors working for a security firm in the southern part of war torn IraqTRIBUTES have been paid to Devizes man Andrew Holloway, 32, who was killed in a bomb blast while guarding a British Consulate convoy in southern Iraq.

Mr Holloway, a former soldier, was working for the British security firm Control Risks Group. He and a colleague were killed when a roadside bomb exploded as the convoy was travelling in the Qiblah district, south west of Basra, on Saturday morning.

His family and friends said he was a devoted family man and are devastated by his death.

He was married to Yasmin and they have two young children.

Mr Holloway's parents, Sue and Ken, live in Seend and he had two younger brothers.

His family said in a statement: "Andrew was very much a local boy having lived in the same area all his life. He loved the fresh air of the countryside and the opportunities living in Wiltshire provided to enjoy many outdoor pursuits.

"He was an ardent supporter of the Countryside Alliance and even went to London on numerous occasions to take part in the rallies.

"Andrew also loved his four years in the Royal Welch Fusiliers where he made some fabulous friends, with many of whom he formed long lasting friendships.

"Andrew was married with two young children. His wife and family would like to thank all their friends, family and neighbours for all their support over the last few difficult days."

Mr Holloway, who was known as Olly to many, went to Seend Primary School followed by George Ward School in Melksham.

Peter Reavey, his former headteacher at Seend, said: "I remember Andrew was always cheerful, was a character and full of energy. He was a very popular pupil. I'm very sad to hear of this shocking news."

Anne Turrell, deputy head at George Ward School, said: "George Ward School sends deepest condolences. Our thoughts are with Andrew's family and we wish them peace and hope at this painful time."

A friend, who asked not to be named, said: "He was a fun loving guy and was always there for his family and friends. Everyone who knew him is in shock. He died a hero."

It is not known how long Mr Holloway had worked for Control Risks Group but it is believed he had been working in Iraq as a security contractor on previous occasions.

Mike Hitchcock, director at Control Risks Group, said: "At the same time as providing support to Andrew's family and expressing our deepest condolences for their loss, we pay tribute to his personal professionalism and the qualities that made him such a good team member.

"Along with his colleagues, Andrew was engaged in Iraq in ensuring that the important work of rebuilding the country can continue and we, and all those concerned with the country's future, will always be grateful and remember the sacrifice he made."

The company has been working in Iraq for two years providing security for companies and the British Government. It liaises closely with the British Armed forces and the Iraqi authorities. It employs 500 contractors in Iraq.
